A postpartum doula helps the family transition into life with their newest member of the family.
Some of the services which a postpartum doula can provide include:
- Emotional support: listening to questions or concerns which may come up after birth, discussing the birth experience, helping siblings adjust, guiding family in transition into new roles
- Lactation/feeding support: providing basic non-medical education and assistance with breastfeeding as well as assistance with pumping and alternative feeding methods
- Baby and mother care: helping the mother recover after birth, providing infant care information and helping parents to read baby's cues
- Household assistance: providing an extra set of hands, providing light meals and snacks to family, assisting with light household duties such as laundry and dishes
Postpartum doulas cannot provide medical assistance or advice or take over care of the baby.
